Quirky Shops: Either Or & Doodlage

When I wrote about Either Or the other week, I promised to write a part two. Well, here it is. As I'd mentioned in my previous post, Either Or has been a great supporter of up and coming  Indian fashion brands and they also encourage sustainable fashion. Happily Unmarried and Chumbak are friends of Either Or and were supported by the store. However, the best example of the store's support of young, ethical and quirky is it's collaboration with Doodlage.

When I first spotted this lovely jumpsuit with whimsical bunny prints on one of the store rails, I bounced with joy. When Laxmi brought out more of Doodlage's delights, I was utterly smitten. Doodlage makes gorgeous fashion items out of used clothes. It draws about the traditional Indian ethos of recycling beautiful clothes and handing things down the generations albeit slightly touched-up. Doodlage's price band isn't the cheapest but the quality of its reused fabrics and its robust designs make it good value for money.

The prices start at about £50 upwards for a shift dress to about £80 for the bunny print jumpsuit. The French Influence

It started around my birthday, this French inspiration. At first it was the desire to focus on French cooking (encouraged largely by the husband) and a gift of  Larousse Gastronomique. I then dug out my favourite Diptyque candles from the sales last year and our house has been filled with a glorious Freesia scent most evenings. Slowly but surely my summer appears to be very much influenced by the French lifestyle. I bought multiple issues of French Vogue whilst holidaying on the continent and enjoyed brief spells of escapism, dreaming of Paris, Grasse and Nice.
For a bit of Parisian chic, I've also been using my sturdy Longchamp tote and holdall an awful lot this summer. Be it weekends away, work related stay and to maintain the style quotient on rainy English days, my Longchamp Le Pliage has been a godsend. Indulging in French goodness doesn't always come cheap so for a bit of fashion inspiration I've been eyeing up the cheap and cheerful Bonprix. Their cute Breton jumpers, bohemian floral dresses and scarves are perfect for summer days. As advised by Madame De la Fresange, I like dress up those blue jean days with bejewelled and ultra-pretty bright sandals and Bon Prix have some pretty cute ones. And, to finish my outfits, I spritz a little Hermes Un Jardin En Mediterranee which automatically lifts my spirits and mentally transports me to the orchards of Provence.

Defying Gravity

Do you remember my things to do before my blog turns one list? I'm pleased to report that I've been ticking some of these off! On my list was a quirky partying item which was fulfilled thanks to a chance find on Living Social and the subsequent revelry at the Down Hall Hotel. Unfortunately, the predictable unpredictability of the weather here meant it rained non-stop all weekend. Gone were our plans of wandering the gardens of the country house hotel, playing garden chess and taking outfit shots against the spectacular backdrop of the hotel. Some gentle persuading ( and a few strops) later, the husband agreed to do some low light outfit shots in our fabulous room. Here, I've styled another quirky and ethical look thanks to a few reliable e-commerce friends and one of my favourite shops in forever.

My outfit was styled around my favourite gravity-defying Eamz boots, a real bargain via Cocosa. It is a bit of challenge to style big-statement wardrobe items, as you are probably aware. I've usually worked these walkers with a very plain dress but I decided to get a bit braver this time. In fact, I've teamed it with another statement piece, my O.M.O choli top, worn over a plain cashmere jumper. My skirt is an old yet versatile corduroy number from the Joules sale. And, there is of course my bag BFF, the Mulberry Alexa. The Eamz boots are extremely comfortable and very sturdy. My choli top was handmade by women artisans ( working for O.M.O) from recycled fabrics. O.M.O is one of my favourite shops and I will be writing about it sometime soon.

Also, I haven't yet got round to writing a post about my experience at London fashion Week. FYI, the choli top combo I'm wearing here is what I worn on Day 1 of LFW with a pair of skinny black jeans. How to buy an investment bag on a budget

I love a beautifully made bag and believe in it's transformative powers. I spend far too much time looking at gorgeous bags online ( and in stores when time allows) and have often found exceptional bargains. More recently, I went on a quest for a proper investment bag on a budget and was very happy with the outcome. Since then, I've been looking forward to sharing some of my tips on the blog. Whilst I am by no means the authority on designer bags, I have spent more time researching them recently than I have on my engineering CPD and so it is fair to say I have a few useful ideas.  Here is a snapshot of the 'what', 'where', 'how' and 'when' of investment bag hunting. I'm assuming that if you are reading this post, you have already convinced yourself of the 'why'?! :)

What?: Buying a designer item purely because of its label is wrong. You should only buy something you genuinely like. So whilst pondering the 'what', consider the styles, colours and materials that you like. Based on these choices, develop a specification for your ideal bag. I believe that if it is something you are hoping to invest in, it should be versatile, suit your personal style and durable. So, I'd steer away from snakeskins, for example, unless you were willing to take extremely good care and were prepared for some wear on the material.  Once you've developed the specification for your ideal bag, you should review what is available on the market. Typically, whilst talking investment bags, you are thinking Hermes, Chanel, Mulberry, Valentino, Balenciaga etc. However, more accessible brands like Fossil, Radley and Osprey etc are also good bets. Don't limit yourself to big labels although big labels do retain their value better. Even high street brands like Zara and Topshop often come up with some exceptionally good designs (often designer inspired). Review what is out there and home in on the brand of your choice. I chose a Mulberry Alexa because of its homegrown British feel, its youthfulness, top notch quality and practicality.

Where?: There are plenty of options for where to buy your bag including independent designer stores, factory outlets and designer villages like Bicester, shops like Harvey Nichols, online treasures like Net-a-Porter , Outnet, My Wardrobe etc. One of my favourites is TK Maxx; they stock Valentino, Gucci, Fendi etc at up to 80% off!! eBay, charity shops and vintage stores are also good bets. I'd recommend eBay buying guides to help eliminate fakes. Sites like Achica and Secret Sales also do great vintage sales where you can find Louis Vuitton, Chanel. Hermes etc at relatively bargain prices.

How?: Assuming you now have a sense of what style you want and what brands you like, it is good to go and have a play. Visit the stores that stock what you like and get a feel for bags first hand. Photos are sometimes deceptive and you also need to assess factors like craftsmanship, comfort and safety. Make notes of what you like for reference. For example, I went to a Chanel store to get a feel of the 2.55 but it not move me at all! I admit Chanel was a little beyond my budget but I wanted to see what the fuss was all about. On the other hand, I was completely smitten by a beautiful inky blue snakeskin Bayswater by Mulberry. I chose not to buy it purely because of the delicateness of the material. The bottom line is that you must be objective at all times in order to not regret your decision.

When?: Sale season d'oh! On a more serious note, you need to shortlist what you are after well in advance and confirm your sale stalking strategy. I find the post Christmas sales the best bet. If you choose to buy online, sites like Outnet and Net-a-Porter allow you to save your favourites and I'd recemmond doing that so you don't get lost in the sale jungle. From my personal experience, duty free shopping in the January sales are absolutely brilliant and will give you an extra 20% on top of any existing sale price. I haven't found a single place that has been able to match the price I paid for my Alexa, not even eBay!

Finally, don't get carried away by fads and celeb trends. Ask yourself if you really like your purchase and be brave enough to return something you do not like.

Jo Malone and the Art of Civilised Flying

My favourite flying ritual is going perfume crazy at the duty-free section. I usually end up  spritzing myself with a so many different fragrances that I transform into a little perfume ball as I saunter towards my flight. I am partial to niche fragrances but unfortunately most airports tend to stock only mainstream brands. Heaven would be an airport that stocked Le Labo, Frederic Malle, Penhaligons, Diptyque and Jo Malone. Unsurprisingly, I squealed in delight when I came across the newly opened Jo Malone store at Dubai International airport.

I am a Jo Malone fan and have previously been treated to their complimentary hand and arm massage and fragrance tailoring sessions. I've even dragged Ed along to these. Luxurious indulgences are hard to resist and I so I succumbed to yet another session at Jo Malone Dubai. The session, which lasts around 20  minutes, involves a hand and arm wash with a Jo Malone body wash of your choice (or as recommended), a lovely hand and arm massage followed by perfume spritzing and completed by a vitamin E gel massage. Bliss, if you are a perfume-head like me.

 

The idea is that you choose a fragrance family you like and then experiment with fragrance layering. The Jo Malone website also provides combination suggestions. My all time favourite is Wild Bluebell  layered with Blue Agava & Cacao Cologne. I often spritz some on even when when I'm lounging around the house and sometimes before I go to bed. The mix of floral and chocolatey notes is just the perfect the formula for lifting my spirits after a long day. At the recent session, I experimented with Nutmeg & Ginger layered with Pomegranate Noir -a lovely combo of spicy and fresh notes. Ed tried the newly launched Earl Grey & Cucumber with Amber & Lavender- it smelt musky and macho yet had a lovely freshness to it. Jo Malone fragrances lie quite close to the skin so I sometimes experiment layering them with stronger scents like Hermes or a woody Penhaligons scent to enhance sillage.

But, this post isn't just about Jo Malone. Besides perfume-mania, below are other little things ( in my experience)  that help  make flying (especially long haul) feel luxurious even if you fly cattle class like me...

 

Seats: Due to Ed's long legs, we always try and get emergency exit seats on flights. You can't book these online and so you need to get to the check-in desk early. They make the worLd of difference, even if you have little legs like me. You can also be cheeky and ask for complimentary upgrades at the gates- just make sure you scrub up well.

Foot massage: Most airporst have massage facilities. I've found that it costs about £10-£20 on an average ( depending on where in the world you are) for a 15-20 min foot massage to soothe tired feet and improve circulation. Just what you need to cope with several hours of travelling in a pressure vessel. I must add that I've found that full body massages don't really work for me while flying-I tend to feel a bit rough after.

Sleep Lounges: Not all airports do these and I think they are missing a trick. Singapore has the best I've seen so far. The Rainforest Lounge has sleep pods that can be hired for an hourly rate in between connecting flights or whilst waiting for a silly-hour flight. They also offer light bites and fantastic massages. If you do your research before you fly, you will be able to either find airport transit hotels that offer hourly rates or you could negotiate a rate to get into one of the posh business class lounges. Sleep, as you know, can do wonders to your feeling of wellbeing

Flying Fresh: Ed introduced me to the concept of showering in between flights-I did not think it would help when you are getting into a manky plane again but it did. You can choose to use the free shower facilities available at most airports or for a small charge, use a hotel facility with all the toiletries, towels etc included. The Dubai International Hotel has one of the best facilities for this-for about £7 you get an hour's use of a shower cum dressing room with fluffy towels, a bathrobe, slippers and good quality toiletries. It made a huge difference to how I felt after many hours of flying. Also, carry a small pot of moisturiser, wipes, a face spritzer and toothpaste & brush to keep you feeling fresh up in the air.

Duty Free Shopping: Did you also know that most of the posh duty free stores offer a reserve and collect service? Airport duty free sections are also ideal for investment purchases. The Heathrow Duty Free used to be one of the best places to buy a classic Chanel bag (up to £500 cheaper for a Chanel 2.55) but they have recently stopped selling their classics at airports. You can still buy other styles for much cheaper. Also,  if you plan to fly around the January sales time, you are likely to get up to 70% off on brands like Mulberry, Miu Miu, Ferragamo and Smythson in their annual sales. Fab or what?!
