DIY Dainty Neon Crytal Necklace

Like most of you, my tastes have changed over the years. That means I once bought a lot of 'tat'. I try to do less of that now. Whilst sorting out my jewellery boxes, I found this little crystal necklace which is pretty enough but isn't quite me. I've been wanting to do a nail polish crystal necklace project for a while now and I thought this necklace was perfect for it. Here is how I did it:

You will need:
A crystal rhinestone necklace ( you can find really cheap ones for about £1 in charity shops or in the high street sales)
Nail polish of your choice
Cotton buds for tidying up the nail polish
Old newspaper to use as a base
   

Firstly, decide what style you want to go for. Design houses like Anton Heunis, Dannijo,Tom Binns etc can provide plenty of inspiration. High street stores like Zara and H&M are pretty good too. In my case, I chose to bring out the best in the necklace's inherent style. I chose yellow and green pastel/neon shades to bring out the flower and leaf patterns in the necklace. I chose to not colour all the crystals as I like a little sparkle. And that was it! It took about 10 minutes to dry properly and I was ready to play princess :). I love the quick and unexpected transformation of this necklace. What about you? Ann x

Gyoza Anyone?

'What else can I cook with bloody cabbage?!' I thought the other day. As I sat on the bed watching TV whilst doing mental arithmetic of the various veg and how to store/cook/freeze them, I chanced upon a Jamie Oliver show. Jamie was making a Japanese favourite of Chinese origin, Gyoza. I found my solution to the cabbage conundrum! The recipe was simple enough.  And I could either make the gyoza wrapper myself or find some. I cheated and chose the latter. Our local Chinese shop stocks most asian food items and it only cost me a pound something. Here is how I made the gyoza.

I shredded a cabbage and chopped an onion and fried them in a bit of olive oil. To add my own twist, I mixed some dessicated coconut to the frying mix. I fried the mix for about 10 mins and the added it to a bowl of 500g pork mince. I mixed all the ingredients by hand and took it back to the pan for frying. I believe the traditional recipe does not require the pork to be cooked in advance but I did not fancy that method.

Once cooled, I spread a spoonful of the mix into a gyoza wrapper, crimped the edges of the wrapper and set aside. Once I had a batch of these dumplings I placed them in a saucepan and fried them for a few times before adding 1/4 cup of boiling water, closing the lid and letting the dumplings steam. The result is a dumpling that has a crunchy bottom but is soft on the inside.

To make a dipping sauce, mix soya sauce and chili oil in equal measure and serve. Douzo meshiagare = enjoy your meal! Ann x

London to Paris with Tour De France

Given how much I love Londontown, I thought it was only fitting I gave my readers a quick shout out about the 2014 Tour De France coming to London. This is the biggest annual sporting event in the world with its history dating back to 1903! I went to see the Tour a few years ago and I remember being captivated by the buzz of the place. The weather was glorious and after we cheered the cyclists on, we wandered on to Green Park to continue watching the race on giant telly. This year, the Grand Depart starts from Leeds moving to Harrogate, con tuning then from York to Sheffield  and finally from Cambridge to London.

To commemorate the race, the folks at Yorkshire Building Society have organised a rather exciting photo competition. All you need to do is to take a Tour De France related picture and upload it to Twitter or Instagram with #tdfybs to be entered into a prize draw. The winner will receive a pair of hospitality tickets, including two nights bed and breakfast, for the Tour De France finish at Champs Elysses in Paris!!
